If you are already infected, you would be lucky if any of the paid or free anti-virus programs will clean your computer. Once infected it can be tough to clean off all the malware. That's one of the reason it important to have anti-virus software on your computer. But Avira is a good choice. If you are infected you should also get Malwarebytes anti-malware. You can get both these program from download.com they are both free.

These two are the best among free antivirus. Some people might recommend AVG too, but it has lost its touch, and is not recommended. Choose anyone out of the above two. They are free, excellent, and equally good.

There are many actually, but i will present you 2 most reliable and effective ones, based on my opinion & experience.

Avira has the best detection rate among all anti-virus program, its fast, doesn't slow down your computer, great for scanning files / folders / drives, reliable removal,completely free antivirus software easy to use and configure... Generally, if you are downloading a lot / torrent / p2p / web Avira is the choice for you.

But if you aren't as heavy downloader, then rather pick Avast!. Avast! has really advanced protection on the net ( better protection when surfing ), it will find bad scripts in malicious websites and block connection with the site. Its detection rate is worse than Avira's, if you ask me it has awfully complicated main panel and i think it generates a LOT of false positives, basically for each keygen and crack.

It is the very best free antivirus dont listen to people that say otherwise, especially the people that recommend avg they don’t know what they are talking about. Avira is the best stick with it but you will also need a firewall i suggest zone alarm and malwarebytes/super antispyware for antispyware then you will be completely secure. Unlike the people that recommend AVG i have evidence that supports Avira is the best and AVG as the worst. Detection rates (higher is better) Avira 99% Avast 95% Avg 93%.

Avira is consistently rated as the best free anti virus program in tests and outperforms many paid for anti virus programs. You should be using a firewall too rather than XP's own. I'd recommend Comodo rather than Zonealarm which I used to use.
I would recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials. It can be downloaded for free at Softpedia.
