is self-cutting usually limited to young people or does it reach into the ages of the the 40s and 50s?
It starts in adolescence. I am in my 30s and still struggle with it. Self-cutting is an expression of angry feelings that are difficult to express. If you do this you are not crazy, you just are a sensitive person who is dealing with difficult emotions. Most experts believe that its a phase that lasts no longer than ten years, however I do not believe this to be true. Self harm will continue until you find other ways to deal with your emotions. I am including some links.

Mental disorders don't discriminate. If you feel you have to cut yourself or if someone you know may be doing this the best thing self-cuttingto do is get some help. Talk to a counselor or a shrink.
It can be at any age and it tied (usually) to other mental health issues that are going on, such as anxiety or depression. The cutting is not the problem, it is the symptom. Get help. Soon.

it is part of the emo young culture-yet it is available to anyone, there is pleasure in sin for a season, but then cometh the judgement.

I have helped a number of x self cutters come to Jesus and give up the seeming pleasure of self mutilation.

if you are cutting your self you need to stop and go to the Dr.s for some help.
i think self-cutting is mostly happening with teenagers because tself-cuttinghey have a lot of stress with school, home, etc. I know a couple of people that are my age that i hang out with did it and one was goth like me but she had a lot of stress going on with her life but i don't think people should get help because it's there decision and they can do whatever they want but i would stop because the longer you do it the more addicting it becomes... trust me
Most cutters are younger, but there are self-cutters of any age. If you know or suspect one, please get them some help.
Cutting ranges in all age groups. There are many people in their 40s and 50s who do it but I think that those people probably hide even more/better than teens and younger people do because they might feel more ashamed or alone since you don't hear about it coming from that age group as often. But it does happen.
